The Bayview Hotel, Peterhead
The Bayview Hotel is situated just a few minutes walk from Peterhead Bay in Aberdeenshire.
The proprietors, James and Janette Elder, decided to introduce a no-smoking policy back in September 2004, when they were upgrading the fire alarm system and opening up a new coffee house.
They wanted to be smoke-free for the coffee house and felt it would work better throughout the hotel as a whole rather than have some parts where smoking was permitted and others where it was not.
The Elders demonstrate the policy with appropriate signs and they always inform potential guests about the no-smoking policy when enquiries are first made about bookings.
There has been a mixed reaction but the majority of guests have been very positive about the change. The Elders say they have noticed an increase in the number of business guests who comment that the bedrooms seem to be fresher and cleaner as a result of the no-smoking policy.
Mr Elder says: 'The ban is something that is going to happen soon, so why not try to make the best out of it and implement the policy now.'
