Black Swan, Edinburgh

The Black Swan is a key player in Scotland's traditional music scene and is the historic Port of Leith's first and, so far, only non-smoking bar.

It re-opened smoke-free on November 24, 2004, under new owners Scott Gillies and his wife after a long period of closure.

The Gillies knew right from that start that the Black Swan would have to be a smoke-free bar as both had suffered health problems in the past and neither wanted to work in a smoke-filled environment.

The fact that the smoking ban was imminent when they refurbished the pub boosted their decision to start out smoke-free.

The Black Swan has a large sign which sits outside the pub proclaiming its status as 'Leith's first and only no-smoking pub'. There is also a large sign on the main door, no-smoking signs on every table and almost everybody who enters is pleased with the pleasant atmosphere.

Mr Gillies believes being smoke-free is what brings his customers in. "The no-smoking policy is largely accepted because the majority of customers are there because it is a no-smoking place. Customers are very appreciative of what the pub offers them and business keeps picking up".

Mr Gillies wholeheartedly supports the ban and thinks other establishments should implement it sooner rather than later: "A phased approach is the most effective way for pubs with a long history of smoking customers. It's not sensible to wait right until March 26 to make your place no-smoking. If it is phased, starting with no-smoking areas for now, then customers will know what to expect".
