Award winning restaurant Centotre is a little piece of Italy in the heart of Edinburgh offering authentic Italian style with a buzzy atmosphere. Customers can relax and enjoy coffees or cocktails, pizzas or pasta in a fresh, smoke free atmosphere.
The caffé, occupying an A-listed converted grain merchant's hall in George Street, has been a smoke-free venue since non-smokers Victor and Carina Contini opened it in April 2004.
The Contini's passion for food was the motivation to open as a non-smoking caffé as they firmly believe that food and smoke do not mix and the strong smell of cigarette smoke would mask the delicious aromas from the food and coffee.
Carina Contini says: "Although we have a sign on the door to say Centotre is no smoking, people can tell when they walk in because of the smell of all the food. There is no smoky smell at all."
Customers often comment on the clean, fresh air and the place is always busy, with some customers favouring Centotre over other restaurants specifically because it is smoke-free.
Carina adds: "The customers are very positive about our no smoking policy and I think we only get about one customer a month who leaves because they can't smoke, which is nothing really. There is a marketplace now for smoke-free cafes and bistros so other business should just go for it don't wait for the final legislation."
Centotre, by the way, is Italian for 103, the number of the George Street address.
