Herrislea House Hotel, Shetland

The Herrislea House Hotel is Shetland's only 4-star country house hotel, providing comfortable and friendly accommodation in the centre of Tingwall Valley close to the islands' capital Lerwick.

The hotel is owned by Marjorie and Gordon Williamson and opened in seven years ago with a partial no-smoking policy but went fully smoke free on July 1, 2005. The hotel employs 12-16 staff, depending on the season.

The decision to introduce a total smoking ban in the hotel was motivated by the Williamsons' personal discomfort with smoke when working at the bar, together with a policy always to promote the comfort of customers and staff.

After discussing the merits of going smoke-free periodically over many years, the decision to introduce a no-smoking policy was finally taken and the intention was announced using prominently displayed signs in all areas.

Both staff and customers have been much more positive than expected. A few of the hotel's guests are smokers, and among these some have actually made efforts to stop since the ban was brought in. Almost all the hotel staff are smokers but have not been greatly upset by the decision to go smoke-free.

Mrs Williamson said: "At this stage it has been a positive move and we see no adverse affect on business. Our sales of weekend meals have risen and everyone has been very positive."
