National targets

Headline target

  • A review is currently under way of the target to reduce smoking among young people (aged 12-15) from 14 per cent to 12 per cent between 1995 and 2005 and to 11 per cent by 2010.
  • Reduce the proportion of women who smoke in pregnancy from 29% to 23% between 1995 and 2005 and to 20% by 2010.

Second rank target

  • Reduce smoking among adults (16-64) from an average of 26.5 per cent in 2004 to 22 per cent by 2010.

Smoking and inequalities

  • Reduce smoking during pregnancy in the most deprived areas by 10% from 35.8% in 2003 to 32.2% in 2008.
  • Reduce the smoking rate for adults aged 16+ in the most deprived areas from 37.3 per cent in 2004 to 33.2 per cent in 2008.
